High School Summer Camp

High School Leaders Rocked Hume SD

This fantastic group of high school leaders accompanied our high school students to summer camp at Hume Lake, San Diego. You might think, summer camp in San Diego, that sounds like a vacation! Trust me, going to camp with 30 high school students is no vacation! Fun yes, vacation no! These adults invest a lot of time into our students over the week through play, prayer, dodgeball, mohawks, deep conversations and food. Many of them take a weeks vacation with or without pay to hang and develop relationships with our high school students! So when you see them in the halls, make sure to thank them! Thanks for all your hard work and sleepless nights Ben, Kristin, Darcie, Sarah, Justin, Anthony, Jon, and Victor! You all are awesome!

Summer camp may be winding down, but the excitement was definitely at its peak today. Recreation came to a finish with the CPC boys taking 11th place (affectionately known as two #1’s), and the CPC girls taking the 2nd and 3rd spots! After a quick lunch break, the guys got their second wind and took the dodge ball competition, adding to the previous wins in volleyball and basketball for a combined total of 3 championship wins. Meanwhile, other students took time out of their trip to serve the community on a mission trip with Horizon Urban Ministries. We visited Perkins Elementary School to help with their after school program. Normally this consists of tutoring students and helping with their homework, but due to the Fourth of July holiday we got to play an intense game of soccer with the children instead! When it was time to head back to the church, no one wanted to leave. Finally, the mission trip came to a close by serving food to the homeless. It was definitely the highlight of my trip and a welcome change of pace from the daily routine. After returning to camp, we were treated to a BBQ dinner and Daren’s final message about the Bible’s purpose as the foundation of Christianity. The night ended at Victory Circle with the student’s sharing their experiences from the trip. Tomorrow we leave this place taking the lessons we learned, the experiences we can remember back home, changed but returning to the same.

Recreation Time!!

So as the week has progressed recreation time has seemed to increasingly picked up steam. Hume's recreation operates off of different team units competing for the prize of being the champion of the week. The different teams are represented by different names such as drooly bots, moto bots, and robo cow's. Where they came up with these names no one knows. Anyway our church has won different competitions through out the week, including the Volley ball tournament, of which we won last year as well, and today the Basketball tournament, of which we had the first, second and third place teams. All the games have been a blast and the competition has been intense, but the best part of the week has been the worship and preaching at the chapels. Our speaker, Daren Mc Waters, spoke last night on the gospel of Jesus and offered anyone to make a decision to follow Christ. Of course these moments can be exciting and last night several student from various churches committed their lives to Christ! Tonight Daren taught of the purpose of the Church and the importance of discipleship. I have spoken to many students who are deeply impacted by these chapel's and I know they can be some of the most important times here. And now for the explanations of the mohawks...well...it all started sometime late last night.

As promised, today was packed full of fun activities and games. Recreation time consisted of several different competitive relays. We cheered on our teammates and fellow CPC’ers as they three-legged ran, crab-walked and leap-frogged their way across the field. Without a doubt, however, the highlight of the event was definitely when a certain student of ours, while attempting to sprint back to his team after spinning around a wiffle ball bat, lost his balance and took a head first dive into the turf. The moment was caught on film and has since been relived many, many times. Several students and leaders hung out at the beach and kayaked around the bay. At the same time, a fierce battle took place on the hardwood that left many of the guys exhausted and bruised. After another delicious meal, our speaker taught about the doctrine of man, commenting on how we are created in the image of God and are designed to worship Him, yet still are sinners. And finally, we wrapped up the evening with a doubles ping-pong tournament. Several CPC teams entered but only one made it to the finals: myself and Nick Shen, AKA Team Something Good! After a spirited battle with what appeared to be a couple of professionals, we were narrowly defeated. Despite our initial disappointment, we represented Foster City well and were happy with our overall effort. Worn out from the day’s activities, we all trudged off to our dorms to prepare to do it all over again tomorrow. Peace out!

We Have Arrived!

After many hours three vans, crammed full of teenagers, crept onto the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University. We had arrived and honestly I don't think any of us could have made it any farther. After finding our rooms and eating at the cafeteria we had a great opening chapel where our speaker introduced our theme of "Kinematics", the study of motion without regard to cause. He compared this to people who claim to be Christians, but know nothing of the core beliefs or reason behind their belief. Tonight we looked at the nature of God as described in God's Word, asking the questions, "Who is God, What is He like, Why does it matter?" We are in store for a great day of activities and games tomorrow with a number of our girls going sea kayaking and our guys playing some basketball!
